Beginning in
Highlands, NC this approximately 61 miles of nationally-recognized byway called
the Waters By Way winds through the southern Appalachian hardwood
forests, past countless waterfalls, lakes and two river
gorges.
Traveling from
Highlands, NC up to Almond, NC the Waters By Way follows U.S. 64, old U.S. 64,
SR 1310 (Wayah Road), and U.S. 19. The last few miles of this drive travels
right through the Nantahala National Forest ending at the Lake Fontana.
If you enjoy a scenic
drives where you can have picnics along the way then this drive is the kind for
you. For those of you who also enjoy adventure this byway also offers
boating, canoeing, rafting, biking, fishing, hiking,
swimming, and numerous water sports.
